Tuesday Morning in Kailua Bay with Inez and the Whales
This is my first post to this new women's paddling blog and I'm so excited about it. I am in Hawaii visiting family and friends and also here to celebrate my 50th birthday. This morning I awoke to Kona weather, meaning little to no wind on the windward side of Oahu, not the typical weather pattern. This makes for calm, clear seas. I spent the morning paddling with my friend Inez. We met while paddling outrigger with Kailua Canoe Club on the island of Oahu 20+ years ago and she and I still both love to get together and go paddling on Kailua Bay. This morning was one of those special times because the water was so clear and so calm. We headed out to Bird Rock and on the way out saw whales breaching off in the distance. As we headed around the island we noticed two more whales further out to sea moving slowly across the bay. We headed further out towards Mokumanu, following the whales as they undulated through the ocean. I haven't had a whale experience since I moved away from Hawaii in 1992 so this really made for a special morning and a great pre-50th birthday gift. The photos we took do not do the experience justice but suffice it to say that this morning is one that will not be forgotten. Thank you Inez. I would not have ventured that far out to sea without you.
